Braided Rugs - Braided Area Rug Information

When you hear the word rugs, what comes to mind? The Asian themed rug, of course, simply known as oriental rug. There is however another type of rug called the braided rug. We can trace back the history of braided rugs in the late 1800s. Braided rugs were then made from unsophisticated materials like old clothing or fabric that were used to cover cold floors and warm homes and not for decorations. Nowadays, braided area rugs are made of the finest cotton and wool that last longer than their original counterparts.

Originally, braided rugs were formed by braiding together a few strips of cloth to form an ellipse or a circle, and to strengthen the rug, all loose ends were sewn together. Some features were introduced to make them more appealing and useful. This is the reason why most braided rugs are circular or oval, but they now come in different shapes, like rectangular, circular, and sometimes heart shaped. Sometimes, there is a need to another padding of cotton or other materials to make it stronger and last longer.

Braided rugs began to gain popularity in the early 90’s, soaring in popularity in 1930. Now, braided rugs are lined up with the antiques, such that the older the rugs the more expensive they are. If you are new with this type of rug, it is recommended that you start with the newer ones over the more pricey ones. Braided rugs come in different types—from the most simple and basic, to mixed colored rugs, and the multi-layered ones, and different sizes from a small braided rug to an extra large one.

A braided rug can be used as a rug or can compliment other home or office décor. It can be hung on walls. Choose one that matches your room décor, or to be on the safe side, choose the classic braided rugs to add a touch of elegance. Consider the color and shape and be careful with the finishing and texture. The elegance of a braided rug is what most interior decorators take into consideration, with its mix-and match options for your living room, dining room, guest room, and for office décor.

Braided rugs add color and warmth to any room in the house as they have been originally used—talk about versatility. They not only brightened homes but warmed up cold floors. Nowadays, aside from being decorative materials, they protect your floors, whether they are made of linoleum, tiles, hardwood or wall to wall carpeting.

There are different ways to manufacture braided rugs—the handmade traditional way and the machine made as done by large companies. There are people, like the Amish, who make them the handmade traditional way, with the skills transferred from one generation to another. There are also small scale businesses who hire artisans trained over the years. Whether handmade or machine made, braided rugs continue to serve their purpose of bringing warmth and beauty to homes.

Braided rug kits may be bought from arts and crafts store, while braided rugs can be bought from furniture shops, braided area rug retailers and the Internet.
